Drasko Boljevic has been involved in the visual arts scene in Melbourne for over two decades. He has participated in the arts from diverse angles, from being a gallery co-owner (Azibi Gallery, St Kilda) in the late 90s, to working for several theatre companies as set designer, prop and puppet, including the Institute of Pataphysical Studies, More than Opera and Malthouse Theatre.

His installation Collaging Realities was shown at White Night Melbourne 2016, and you may have seen Drasko’s work when unexpectedly looking down in the laneways of Melbourne. Drasko is currently continuing working within this sphere of 3-D stencil and video work, which can be better viewed with one eye closed, inciting to set on a journey through the eye of a camera, thus questioning what is real. His work tends to include a commentary on current issues, without leaving out a sense of play and humour.

Out of the dark alleyways of yesteryear, collaged creatures traversed realities from the archives of art history and comic books pages. Reimagined into projected concoctions of present day uniqueness, they become fantasy driven visual poetry, a collection of stories set to surprise, amuse and challenge the world from the creator’s perspective.

In “I live across the road from the future”, artist Drasko Boljevic trades the walls and pavement of our Melbourne laneways for his new series of large 3-D stencil works on canvas.

What is Currency? What is it made of, and what is it worth? Does the value fluctuate

depending on who the evaluator is and when it is being evaluated? With this exhibition,

Chang has flipped the vehicle for making purchases into the object to be purchased. Chang

induces viewers to reflect on currency and the value it represents.

 

Annette Chang is a Taiwanese-Australian artist who has lived, studied and worked in Melbourne for more than 30 years. Chang's works combine her Asian cultural background and the influence of Western culture after immigrating to Australia and reflect contemporary social phenomena with the mentality of an observer.

Jarring: The Russian Cookbook Project is an ongoing investigation into culture, the domestic and otherness via the avenue of food. Using food and dining customs to talk about home and belonging, this exhibition explores gender and cultural performativity.

 

The project began with me working on a contemporary Russian cookbook and quickly expanded to looking at how and why I perform my Russian-Australian cis woman identity. What it means to me and all the roles and lines that are blurred between the domestic kitchen space and the artist’s practice space. The show is a pretty epic collection of characters and jarring motifs across 25 new works on paper and canvas.


Elizaveta Maltseva is a Melbourne-based multidisciplinary artist and curator of Russian heritage. She has been exhibiting in Melbourne and internationally for ten years. Maltseva’s practice often, but not exclusively, investigates issues around heritage, identity and nostalgia. She believes that art is not produced in a vacuum and frequently explores external stimulus on creative practice.

Suburban Isolation is the culmination of Adrian Doyle’s research into the intersection between street art and fine art. From working on large-scale water-towers in the desert, to creating one of the largest models of ‘artist as consultant’ through a 2 year residency at The District shopping centre in Docklands, this research has taken Doyle on a journey through mediums and ideas enabling thorough exploration of this juncture. During this extended research period, Doyle has created a number of important projects which have all led to this exhibition, Suburban Isolation.

 

In this exhibition, Doyle presents a series of paintings, an immersive installation, and a highly detailed miniature model. Each medium has been carefully chosen to reference and apply techniques and concepts from both street art and fine art, resulting in a highly considered reflection on a language that is deeply rooted in the artist’s suburban origins and has been a focus of his entire practice and research. The ‘Australian Dream’ underpins each work, and offers a critical analysis on the cross-section of fine art and street art, whilst sharing insights into our collective experiences.

Artist Statement

Paintings: The paintings are clearly placed within the fine art context, yet there is an undeniable feel of the street. For this exhibition I have been able to change some of my applications and techniques, and blend aspects of my street art with my fine art paintings creating a new balance between the two.

 

These paintings examine themes of isolation and the Australian Dream. Over the years I have developed a language that is deeply rooted in my suburban origins, and it has been the focus of my entire practice. To create fine art with a street art link, I had to draw on the iconography and ideas that I naturally use from both forms of expression to help inform this connection.

 

The Pool Room: This is a large-scale, interactive, and site-specific installation that reflects on and continues many of the ideas of ‘Empty-Nursery Blue Laneway’, an artwork I created in 2013 in Rutledge Lane, Melbourne. This artwork aims to offer an immersive experience that feels like you are inside a swimming pool. As the work is kinetic and it will be reflected in the mirrors, it may evoke a feeling of vertigo for the viewer.

 

A model studio: Whilst doing this research project I began to consider links between the street art movement and fine art, and how artwork can exist across both contexts. At some point, I realised that The Blender Studio is in itself a living and evolving artwork that I have been creating, curating and building since its beginnings. Therefore, I am presenting the Blender Studios as an artwork. To encapsulate this idea, I have represented Blender Studios as an artwork in the form of a highly detailed model. The idea of Blender as an artwork places it in a realm of situational aesthetics and kindly references the ‘Walled Off Hotel’ by Banksy. Banksy’s artwork is an excellent example of art that sits at the intersection of fine art, street art and relational aesthetics.

Love street art; hate the tagging. This solo exhibition by Craig Cole presents fine art paintings and drawings offering deep respect for the graff writers and artists he has depicted. This collection demonstrates unparalleled skill in capturing the places and spaces these artists work their magic, and offers new perspectives into these unseen sites across Melbourne.

​

 

Cole has a unique ability to bridge graffiti and urban art with fine art. His years in the western suburbs of Melbourne as a graff kid has given him insight into this secluded and secretive world. His technical ability combined with unusual choices of location and composition gives him the ability to convey this world in a sensitive and almost nostalgic way.

​

 

Self Imposed Rules is a gift to hip hop, a cry for expression in the face of suppression, and is a rap on a canvas so fresh it’s dripping with Morning Dew. It’s through his brush that Cole weaves universal magic, a story, a vision, a swagger and a stoic lens into a life that most are afraid of.
