Joshua Davison

artist statement. ________________

Joshua Davison is a contemporary artist based in Auckland whose practice fuses realism, abstraction, and sculptural painting to explore the boundaries between two and three dimensional form.

Largely self-taught, he employs traditional oil techniques alongside self-developed methods including palette knife layering, MDF topographies, and acrylic polymer piping reminiscent of
three-dimensional printing. These 3D forms often depict the human figure and figurative compositions in subtle ways.

His work is rooted in meticulous craft, from hand-building canvases to orchestrating complex compositions that balance realism and planned abstraction. Nature serves as both subject and inspiration, with the symmetry, texture, and colour of flowers and foliage informing his sculptural and impasto works. Driven by the pursuit of originality, Joshua continually experiments to develop unique techniques and tools, seeking to expand the possibilities of painting while engaging viewers in a meditative experience.
