Brooke Lee

artist statement.

“There is so much peace to be found in people’s faces.”   --  Kae Tempest

Brooke Lee is a Chinese Australian portrait artist who has a facination for faces. They are a ‘super recogniser’, as classified by neurologists at Harvard University, Glasgow University, University of Canterbury, and UNSW. Lee is part of ongoing research into their rare ability to memorise and recall faces after a single encounter.

A self taught artist who began with the all-female graffiti and street art crew Stay Fly, Lee is now exploring new approaches to portraiture, with the aim of returning their work to a larger scale. They believe street art reigns supreme as a form that is woven into daily life and with their depiction of subjects that show strength, emotionality and queerness they hope to bring shared humanity to shared space.
